Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Itten Dojo was founded in 1992.
What is your primary product or service?
We teach traditional, non-sport, Japanese martial arts that date to the time of the samurai.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I've been interested in martial arts since childhood -- my father was a Marine and had tremendous respect for the Japanese as warriors, having fought them on Iwo Jima. I began training in martial arts at Bucknell University, where I majored in Japanese Studies. I hold black-belt ranks and/or instructing licenses in karate, aikijutsu and kenjutsu.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Itten Dojo focuses on old-style martial arts, training only adults and mature teenagers. The arts we practice have no sporting component or competitions; training is purely for self improvement, self defense, and enjoyment -- the arts are a tremendous amount of fun.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have one location and no plans to expand. Because these arts must be conveyed person-to-person, classes are small with a high degree of interaction with instructors.
Provide detailed directions to your location
The dojo is located in a two-story, blue metal building, at the west end of Mechanicsburg near the intersection of West Simpson Street and Trindle Road and next to the NAPA Auto Parts Store. We are half-way back, on the side of the building facing the auto parts store.
What type of payments do you accept?
Cash, check, credit cards or electronic transfer.
Which areas do you service?
Central Pennsylvania.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Robert Wolfe is the chief instructor.
What are your hours of operation?
Monday through Thursday 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Friday 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
That I have done something to improve their life.
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
"The purpose of a school is to help students learn something new; the purpose of a dojo is to help students become something new."
